Common auditory-visual space perception in early infancy

Abstract

Common auditory-visual space perception was studied in infants aged 10 to 52 weeks. A violation of the normal special relationship between a speaking person and his voice was presented and the infants' response to the incongruent presentation was measured in terms of affectivity, inattention, and heart rate. The youngest infants, age 10 to 23 weeks reacted with heart rate acceleration to the incongruent presentation; indicating an expectancy that voice comes from a person.
