A descriptive bibliography of Thomas Chatterton

Abstract

This thesis attempts to offer bibliographical descriptions of all known Chatterton publications. The first forty-three entries are descriptions of editions of the complete works, the poetical works, the Rowley poems, miscellanies and supplements, single works, selections, and translations. Those editions which are textually and bibliographically important are described more fully than those which are not so significant. The remaining entries constitute lists of Chatterton’s periodical publications, works of doubtful authenticity, and works wrongly attributed to the poet. Generally, the descriptions are assembled under the following headings: half-title, title, collation, colophon, contents, head-titles, running-titles, catchwords, typography, plates, errors, notes, reviews, and copies examined. A chronological list of all relevant Chatterton publications has been included at the beginning of the bibliography.
