Vernaculaire Franco-Ontarien et défis de traduction: une étude de Fucking Carl, de Caroline Yergeau et Louis-Philipe Roy

Abstract

This thesis presents a translation into Cap Breton English of Caroline Yergeau and Louis-Philipe Roy’s play Fucking Carl. This unpublished one-act play was originally written in the Ontarian variety of French. The first chapter of this thesis is a theatrical and literary analysis of the play, with particular attention to the flow of the dramatic action and the role of the characters’ vernacular French in the plot. Theories of sociolinguistics are used to deepen this analysis. The second chapter covers loose (or free) translation, and the importance of the translator’s agency. In the third chapter, difficulties that arose in the translation process are analyzed in detail alongside their solutions.
