Abstract
Most of us are familiar with generic social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter, but there is a new generation of academic networking sites that are aimed specifically at scholars. Services like ResearchGate, Academia.edu, Mendeley, and Zotero encourage faculty and graduate students to share citations, links, and research papers freely online. While these sites promote higher visibility for research, they also bring to light a number of intellectual property issues. At least one major publisher has targeted academics who post papers in violation of their author agreements. This session will introduce you to the aims and benefits of academic networking platforms, and will help you to understand your rights when it comes to sharing published articles online.
